Re: Advanced Improvisation (started by Jazzyoungster)

Hi Soren. This answer may not find favour with the more musically and theoretically gifted players than myself, but here goes! ....Forget the theory and play with your heart, you know the notes and the modes, you're already a musician. Improvisation to me is using the vocabulary we all have to say what WE have to say in a natural and non-contrived way. I am steeped in musical tradition, but am on a never ending journey of dissent from that tradition..as Miles said " I am cursed with change " or as Schoenberg stated: " I venture to credit myself with having written truly new music which, being based on tradition, is destined to become tradition ". I guess what I'm trying to say is that the journey of improvisation is a personal fight to resist the inevitable reference to the past that we are all doomed to repeat!!! But the fight must go on..resist all convention..strive for originality..that to me is a jazz player. lol. My apologies for such an abstract response, maybe somebody with more sensible advice can help you more! My very best wishes and regards. Paul.

Re: How to begin Jazz (started by HerV)
Hi Herv,

Paul from England here. That is really a much tougher question than it first appears..so here goes with some personal thoughts from a relative newbie to Jazz, although I've been playing for 30+ years ( Man that makes Me feel sooo old !! LOl )

Remember when You first picked up a guitar? I'm sure You will have recieved the guidance to listen to as many guitars players as possible? Well the same was true for Me in this strange thing called Jazz, only that was complicated more than somewhat by also listening to piano players, horn players..even drummers!!! There are masses of information available for all musical abilities on the web, in terms of tab, notation, scales, musical theory, which are really useful if that appeals to You. I took the route of listening to those artists whose output really grabbed Me, and tried to figure out , stylistically , what They were doing, without attempting to sound exactly like Them, more of the idea of trying to get a flavour rather than a specific recipe. That in turn opened up a huge pallette of undiscovered territory, which I'm busy at this moment exploring in My usual chaotic and undisciplined way. I have to say that I thought I was a reasonably good player before, I'm finding out as a result of this journey and the improvements I'm slowly making, that the description of very average would have been nearer the mark !!! So in conclusion, listen, practise, and most importantly enjoy !!!

Thanks for a great, thought provoking question.

Best

Paul.
