Hey There!
If you are more of a methodical man, I'd say you need a few things.
1. Knowledge of you major, minor, and mixolydian scales in all twelve keys (or in at least five positions for guitar).
1a. Bonus points if you learn the arpeggios to each scale!
2. I recommend two beginner books.
A. Jazz Conception by Jim Snidero
This book contains 21 solos that contain the key elements of the jazz idiom. Learn 'em all, and then understand and begin using these licks in your own solos
B. The Real Easy Book from Sher Music Co.
Not much to say except that this book contains a bunch of "real easy" jazz songs for you to learn and improvise on top of.
If you need backing tracks to the songs you are learning, I recommend the program improvisor.

http://www.iwasdoingallright.com/tools/v...My favorite online ear training tool. I constantly use the "Melodies" tool to work on my ear training. No other program has something like this one does.

Most of the voicings are pretty straight forward. The hardest part I find about the tuning is instinctively moving to a fret and playing a totally wrong note. "Well, that fret used to be a Bb!"

Perfect for sight reading, one can play a chromatic scale without any stretches or shifts.
